Town Hall with Dr. William Barber II

We welcomed the Poor People's Campaign and Dr. William Barber to the church on July 26, 2019, for a town hall meeting about toxic air and high cancer rates among people living near chemical plants in towns along the Mississippi River in St. John & St. James Parishes.

Pentecost is this Sunday

It's Pentecost this Sunday! Wear Red!

Why?

Red symbolizes the work of the Holy Spirit and the sacrifices of martyrs.

But wait there's more!

We will be participating in a nationwide special offering (monetary donations collected during worship), the Pentecost Offering:

Bread for the Journey Memes from More Light Presbyterians

As we gear up for PRIDE in New Orleans, we wanted to share this collection of memes from the

Communion with Rev. Kathy

Join us this Sunday for Communion and the celebration of Pentecost. Pentecost is often referred to as the birthday of the Church because it is when the apostles went out among the people and began spreading Jesus’ message, thus establishing the beginning of the Church. God's love is for everyone. Yes, EVERYONE! Pride Weekend in New Orleans is a good time to remember that!

The communion bread is gluten free, and we offer grape juice or wine. Taste and see that the Lord is Good.

This Sunday, 11am, with coffee and refreshments.

Congratulations to the Class of 2019!

Today we honored Michael, Ludovica, and Blaise who are graduating high school this year. They've all received scholarships to college as well. Great things are on there horizon for these three!

Maundy Thursday Service is cancelled

Due to the threat of inclement weather, the Maundy Thursday service scheduled for tonight at 6pm is cancelled.

Hosanna, Hallelujah, Jesus Christ is Near!

Palm Sunday was a beautiful sunny day- the children enthusiastically waved palms, Tracy Rene gave an inspired children's sermon- don't hold on to your ideas too tightly- experience God with open hands and open minds- then the children, led by Amanda on piano and accompanied by May and Mary Frances on the bells.

Rev. Kathy gave a wonderful sermon titled, “And Now, The Big Time” telling of Jesus going into Jerusalem with a fun analogy including Dr Pepper and New York City. You might have had to be there, but it was terrific, unexpected, with a surprise ending!

Holy Week at First Presbyterian

Come join us for our observance of Holy Week.

Palm Sunday -  April 14, 11 am
There will be a palm procession by the youth and a performance by the Children's Choir. Worship Service and Communion will be led by Rev. Kathy Crighton.

Maundy Thursday - April 18, 6 pm
A service of communion to end with the Passion scriptures including extinguishing of candles in a traditional Tenebrae manner. Service will be led by Rev. Lynn Hyder and Session Members.  Dinner will be served.

Children's Choir

Our lovely Amanda Wadsworth has graciously agreed to work with the young people for the next four Sundays, getting them ready to sing for either Palm Sunday or Easter Sunday. Rehearsals will be done during the sermon time, so they will be in church for the Children’s Moment, then they will leave and go upstairs after the choir anthem.

Amanda is so gifted with children, and such a wonderful musician, I know it will be a great opportunity for the church youth to have some music time, and will be a super addition to the worship service whenever they sing.
